The Story
If you’ve never drank wine in a cave, then you need to get on out to Vina Castellano! Their tasting room is situated inside a large cave, and it’s pretty neat. It’s got an awesome vibe, with lights strung around, heaters to make it cozy, and lots of tables to sit at and enjoy a glass of wine. They’ve got a cool family winemaking story that’s pretty well regarded in the Auburn Wine Trail region.
The Wines
We tasted some interesting wines, starting with a Sauvignon Blanc, then moving through a Rose, and a nice blend of Cabernet Franc, Grenache, and Syrah that they call their Abuelita, made in honor of the winemaker’s grandmother. We tasted 3 different vintages of their Tempranillo, each a little different from the other. They’re known for their Tempranillos, and you can definitely see why! Then on to 2 different Cabernet Francs, one unfiltered that was incredible, then through 2 vintages of Syrah. It was very cool to be able to taste all the different vintages of the same variety so that you could compare the different years and note their nuances.
The Videos
We did 2 videos here, one inside the cave so you could check it out, and one as we drove out the driveway since it was so beautiful!

Awesome cave, some day we’ll get there to taste in the cave. Who was the couple that was with you? Thanks for sharing.
Hi Bev! Very cool cave…neat wine trail up there! We were out tasting with Hoot’s Dad and Stepmom…Great tasting partners!
Wow that sounds like you had a lot of fun, so how many wineries did he take you to?
We went to 4 wineries while we were visiting. We’ve learned how to survive all that wine by dumping and spitting! Hehehe, otherwise we’d be done after 2 wineries!
So true, I would have to do the same, although my husband would have drank them all…hehehe. Did you video all the wineries you visited? You know I add them to my favorites and to their newsletter, gotta follow the leader…hehe You guys make my day….Cheers!
Awww, thanks Bev! You definitely make our day, too! So far, we’ve done Mt Vernon and Vina Castellano from the Auburn wine trail. We’ll keep you posted on the others as soon as we put them out there!
Have you ever tried Jeff Gordon wines? He won the race yesterday in Phoenix. I want to try his wine but a little pricey, would love to have him sign a bottle too. My oldest son has a lot of his memorabilia, this would be a cute addition to his collection.
We haven’t tried Jeff Gordon wines…but now I’m intrigued! Keep us updated if you get some! Would love to hear what you think!
Go to his website: info@jeffgordonwines.com. I found a coupon code on-line so I will try it and see if I can get a couple bottles. Cheers!
