A while back at the urging of a friend, we went to a local spot downtown to taste through the flight being poured by a local winery called Clos Solene. We had not heard of them prior to that but after tasting through the three wines and chatting with Guillaume, the owner and winemaker as well as his wife Solene, we talked about going out to the winery to do an interview.
We met up with Guillaume this past weekend out at L’Aventure, which is where he is the assistant winemaker and also where he makes his own label. He hand crafts his two to three hundred case project, called Clos Solene. When we say hand craft, we literally mean that his two hands do every aspect of the process; from vines, to grapes, to pruning, to harvesting, to hand turning the barrels. Passion and dedication are what allow him to work ten to twelve hours per day at L’Aventure during harvest and then numerous more hours on his own project.
Guillaume grew up in France, making wines with his father on their vineyard property. He carries on many of these traditions now as he makes wine, and he also has some of his own creative processes. Either way, the wines that he produces are all incredibly unique and the attention that he puts into each detail shows in the end result. We loved everything that he let us get our hands on!
Guillaume will have his label at Hospice du Rhone, which is a huge international Rhone wine event that is held here in Paso Robles in April 2011.
