How to Get What You Want!

Well, how to get what you want as far as wine goes, anyway!  We can’t be responsible for the rest of your life, but we can weigh in on the wine stuff.  So, how do you go about getting what you want and what you like into your glass?  That’s a great question, and it all starts with you knowing what you want in the first place.  Is it a hot summer day and a chilled glass of Rose sounds like it’ll do the trick?  Or have you been dreaming of a rich, dark glass of something red?

The next step in this process is to know that there is no right or wrong answer; it’s all about YOU and what your taste buds are telling you.  Don’t worry about what you should or shouldn’t be drinking, after all, who’s smarter than you are about what you put in your mouth?  You might be in the mood for something specific one day and something totally different the next…that’s what makes drinking so fun!

Moving right along, get out there and taste things!!!  That’s the only way you’re going to figure out what you like and don’t like in certain wines.  Hoot’s a huge Pinot Noir addict while Annie goes for the grungy Rhones when drinking a red.  Talk to people in the tasting room, invite friends over to do a blind tasting, open that bottle of wine that’s been sitting in the back of the rack forever and taste it!  Write down notes if you feel like it or take pictures; whatever will help you key in on the characteristics that you like.  You’ll notice that we don’t critique wine, but when we do talk about specifics it’s because we’ve taken notes while tasting and bring them home with us to write down here.

Now, you’re forming an opinion, you’re making some decisions and you’re standing up for YOUR wine repertoire!  You’re doing good!  Be sure to take some time to learn a little bit about wine descriptors and qualities so that when you’re out in the big world you can articulate what you want to your bar, wins shop, or tasting room tender.  If you can’t voice what you want, chances are you won’t get it!  This doesn’t mean to go out and get your degree in wine-snobbery, it just means to gather enough info to be able to talk about what you like and why.  Plus, you like this wine stuff, right?  Why not educate yourself here and there, after all the homework is kind of fun!

There you go, your glass is brimming with exactly what you want!  Enjoy, and cheers!

Great Post. I am all over the place when it comes to drinking wine – white, rose, sparkling, red, etc. All about tasting, knowing what you want to drink, and drinking what you love:)

Thanks, Renee! I’m all over the place, too! Mostly whites these days, but that’ll change when the weather cools down I’m sure. And thank you for reminding me about sparkling! Haven’t had much of that lately and that’s one of my favorite things! Can’t not celebrate when you have bubbles in your glass, right??!!??!!

Thanks H ‘n’ A! But sometimes I just smile, say “please”, bat my eyelashes a little, and just allow myself to be pleasantly surprised! All kidding aside, your wine blog has helped greatly in the maturation of my own pallet! Thanks again for sharing so much comprehensible information with the drinking masses! In short… for just being plain down-to-earth! (no short jokes please)

Awww, Mo! Thanks for hangin out and reading! We love you, lady! And while you’re a little closer to the ground than most, we appreciate your friendship and support! I’m glad your palate is maturing, that might be the only thing maturing over here at our house! You know the deal…keep practicing and sooner or later you’ll feel like you know more about wine, either that or you’ll feel a really good buzz! Cheers…xoxo
