Have you ever bought wine for the sole reason that it was good?
Have you ever bought wine for the sole reason that you liked the person who made it or that was pouring it for you?
I guess the question is: When you buy wine, is it about the people or the wine?
Personally, I think it’s about the people. That’s because I’m one of those folks that thinks it’s always about the people in every situation we find ourselves in. We are drawn to the story, to humanness. When the story, or humanness, is missing we tend to not have the interest or loyalty that we would otherwise.
If a winery had damn good wine but the people suck I won’t go there and in turn will not buy that wine. I have however, been to a winery that has pretty good wine but not great wine and bought a ton of wine over time because the people are awesome. At the end of the day I avoid the jerks, the weirdos, and the wine I think is terrible. I think I would have to add that I avoid expensive wine too. I’m not looking to go broke getting buzzed.
Here are a couple of links that touch on these ideas: This one from Cellar Angels and this one from the Napa Valley Register.
So what are your thoughts? What is the primary reason behind your purchase of a bottle of wine?
