Robert Hall of Robert Hall Winery passed away on October 4, 2014 at the age of 85.
This is indeed sad news. Annie and I send our condolences out to the Robert Hall family and friends of the family. Robert Hall is another one of those big names in the Paso Robles area and it simply won’t be the same in Paso without him. He leaves behind an amazing legacy.
Robert Hall Winery was one of the first wineries (don’t remember if it was them or J. Lohr) that I had ever been to in my life. Annie took me back in 2007 shortly after we first met and I remember how much fun we had, how I enjoyed the wine, and how we walked out with friendships (as well as wine). One of the people that had been working there at the time ended up photographing our wedding…Josh Kimball.
Needless to say, we have fond memories of the winery and of the Robert Hall name. He did a lot for this area and for the wine community. He will be missed…and again, our thoughts go out to his family.
This is a piece published by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance regarding the loss that our community has suffered:
Robert L. Hall, Owner of Robert Hall Winery, Dies at 85
The Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance is deeply saddened to report that Robert L. Hall, owner of Robert Hall Winery, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, October 4th, 2014 at the age of 85 from complications related to an extended illness.
Originally from St. Paul Minnesota, Robert invested in a variety of business ventures including bowling centers, travel agencies, apartments and shopping centers. For a period in his life he was also involved in champion horse breeding. In the 70’s, he and his family took a trip to Southern France and discovered a new passion – wine. After researching various areas, he settled in Paso Robles for the location of his vineyards and winery. His vision came to fruition when he began making wine in 2001. Up to his final days, he enjoyed traveling nationally for sales trips, hosting wine events, visiting with guests in the tasting room, and working in the office daily.
He is survived by his spouse, Margaret Burrell Hall, and his three daughters. Margaret will continue running the winery and hospitality operations with the same level of care and attention that guests have come to expect.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Margaret, Robert’s family and the entire staff of Robert Hall Winery.

It’s really a shame when our industry loses someone like Robert Hall. He was one of the people that realized that to make his winery work, paso Robles had to work. He was a tireless promoter of our appelation, and his efforts benefitted all of us in Paso. I will miss him and our industry will miss him. thank you Robert.
Matt (a.k.a. Hoot) says
Thank you for sharing, Gary. I always appreciate your perspective on things.
