I don’t know why this topic pisses me off. It should just pass on by like so many other topics. But no, it hangs on to my brain like something that hangs on to something else really tight. Come up with your own analogy.
I recently saw this article titled, “Where Are All the “Rebel” Women Winemakers”. The title alone made me sigh. I read part of it, not all of it, because again, I’m tired of the topic. I wrote this blog post titled, “Paso Robles: Female Winemakers”, back in June of 2014. If you go to the last two paragraphs of that blog post you will read my thoughts on “female” winemakers. I will drop more thoughts now.
Generally speaking I am tired of labels: Christian, Catholic, atheist, Republican, Democrat, female, male, fat, skinny, beautiful, ugly, and so on. I get it, as humans we do that in order to give ourselves information. However, I feel we have this insatiable need to label so many things so we know what box people live in which then dictates whether or not they are “good” or “bad” in our biased brains.
Oh no, that person is Muslim, don’t be friends with them. Watch out, that person is a Democrat or Republican, therefore they are stupid. Whoa, that is a “female” winemaker…cute but probably not as good as a male? Or do we label them female because we are actually okay with them and are sincerely inviting them into the good ol’ boys club?
We don’t call someone a Mormon winemaker or a Republican winemaker. How about steam punk winemaker? Or “hasn’t had sex in 3 years” winemaker? Bearded winemaker? Gay? Shaved head? Chevrolet owning?
At the end of the day, we live in such a childish society…in my opinion. Stop labeling shit. Do you like the wine? Is the person cool? Great! I have many friends that are quite different than me. I have no issues with “different” but I do have an issue with being a jerk. Oh I know…how about jerk winemaker? Or would we still have to say jerk female winemaker?
WOW!!! We were just having the same conversation here in the office, ‘stop labeling shit’! It’s so frustrating to me because then there are expectations or assumptions made based on the label.

It’s ridiculous to me. Sadly, labels don’t even mean the same thing to the masses. You say ‘female’ or ‘agnostic’ or ‘Republican’ or ‘Democrat’…they all mean different things to different people. Sick of all the labels.
