On a recent weekend we decided to get out of our “area” (Paso Robles) and try something new as a family. We headed down to San Luis Obispo to try hiking Madonna Mountain and then go grab lunch. The only “hikes” we’ve done with Sammy at this point are Harmony Headlands directly south of Cambria.
Harmony Headlands is a much easier trek than Madonna Mountain, especially for a 3 ½ year old. We did make it a good distance, though and it really is a beautiful hike. As you ascend you have views of rolling hills, downtown San Luis Obispo, and of course…nature. I want to go do this one again without Sammy because I’d like to get to the top.
Once we decided it was time to come down and go find some place to grab a snack, most things were not yet open so we took Sammy to the mission in downtown SLO. We took him down to the creek and bubblegum alley as well. You’ll see some photos of that in the slideshow below.
After the “Sammy in SLO” tour we head over to Blast 825 Taproom to grab a cider for me and a mimosa for Annie. Really cool vibe and as with many places in SLO, I loved the sitting at the open windows right at the sidewalk. Downtown SLO is absolutely beautiful. I want to get back over to this joint and try their pizzas. Apparently they do pizzas the same way Subway does sandwiches…minus the Jared (too soon?).
From there we decided to go eat at Eureka Burger. It’s a place that is kid friendly and that is always a plus. The food is always decent and they have an insane list of beers. You’ll see shots of the food we had as well as Sammy rummaging through Annie’s salad like a rabbit. Adorable, isn’t it?
All that said, the main point of this post is to remind you (and us) to get out and do something different every once in a while. Sure we have our favorite spots but it’s always good to change things up. Hike a different trail. Try a different restaurant. Nothing like new, or different, experiences. Cheers!

Thanks for the inspiration. We need to get out there and see all the local peaks.

Scott, so many great hiking spots in the county. We have just scratched the surface.
