We recently made an appointment with Matt Villard, owner and winemaker at MCV Wines, to taste through his line-up of wines. We’ve met Matt on a few occasions including a time on The Corks Dorks wine radio show on the local San Luis Obispo station, Krush 92.5.
Matt opened MCV Wines in 2011 and currently makes 800 to 900 cases of wine per year. Here’s a quote from his website, “Here at MCV, we focus on unique and interesting blends that revolve around Petite Sirah. This wonderfully dark and rich grape is smooth, elegant and delicious yet, bold, powerful and age-able. It has the unique ability to be made in various styles that can be used to create multiple wines from the same grapes. My first two production years yielded around 500 cases each vintage. However, 2013 will see a small increase due to incorporating new grape varietals into my program and a couple new blends.”
So, here’s what we tasted:
2016 Pink $18.00 (Rose of Petite Sirah, Syrah, Grenache, & Tannat)
2015 TMZ (67% Viognier 33% Grenache Blanc) $30.00 (Viognier from Caliza, Grenache Blanc from ONX)
2014 Grenache $42.00 (Glenrose Vineyard, also has 3% Viognier)
2011 1105 (86% Petite Sirah 9% Syrah 5% Grenache) $55.00
2014 Rosewynn Vineyard $52.00 (Petite Sirah)
2013 Black (73% Petite Sirah 18% Tannat 9% Petit Verdot) $52.00
The wines, across the board, were very nice. The words on his tasting menu, “Smooth. Bold. Elegant.”, describe the wines quite well. There’s no need to really go into each individual wine on this one. They were each uniquely beautiful wines. Even if pressed on this one, it’s hard to pick a stand out other than to say, hot weather requires Rose or chilled white wine. That said, in the evening when the temps cool down, I would be more than happy and satisfied with any of those reds on my dining room table.
I would strongly encourage you to reach out to Matt to make an appointment or visit their Morro Bay tasting room. More details here.
This was a fun tasting. Matt’s wife, Teresa, and their little boy, Chris, were there. These private tastings allow for a completely different experience. We thank them for doing this with us.
