Everyone has something to give. Typically, it manifests through one of two things, time or money. Annie and I find it important to give back. How ever and whatever you can. We give to certain charities and causes throughout the year but over the recent holidays ending 2017 we discussed what we could do to get Sammy involved.
Annie did some research and we agreed to do something for a family at RISE Women’s Shelter. Here is the mission statement from the RISE website: “Transform the lives of sexual and intimate partner violence survivors, their families and the community through services and education that promote safety, healing and empowerment.” I would encourage you to learn more here.
We chatted with a gentleman that works at RISE and he let us know about a mom and her two boys that we could “adopt” for Christmas. Annie got a gift card for each of them along with a small gift. Her and Sammy got everything together and wrapped it up. Having Sammy be part of the process was important and explaining to him why and what we were doing was the key thing for us. We are fortunate. We must give back.
Then, Sammy went with Annie to deliver the gifts. They aren’t allowed to meet the family but they got to go to the facility and leave it for them. All in all, giving back feels good. I prefer giving than receiving. The “feel good” part is great and you feel like you’re actually helping a situation. You feel like you’re creating change…for the better. Our goal is to do this more often and throughout the year.
Those of us that have the time or money, even a little bit, need to step up and help those in need. Find something you are passionate about and give to that cause. Remember, every little bit helps and if not us…who? Happy 2018!
