I have to say, this may be the coolest new find in Paso Robles. Located at 1346 Railroad St., Cal Coast Beer Co. is the new hip spot to hang out. Don’t believe me? Go check out the facility (but first check out the photos in the slideshow below). I predict big things for this place. As far as I know they are still in soft opening mode but it’s worth stopping in. Oh, and the beer is good too.
A couple of side notes, the property will also have a wine tasting room, a live music area, and eventually an operating food trailer. All the things that make for a great afternoon in Paso wine (beer) country. Here’s a short Q&A with brewer, Frank Panian:
Matt: Are you originally from this area?
Frank: I have lived on the Central Coast for five years. I grew up in Modesto, California and then joined the military after high school. I trained at Camp SLO and fell in love with the people and climate. I knew I eventually wanted to be here. After college I moved several times with my wife until we were able to settle on the northern central coast. We feel like we have found the perfect place to raise our family.
Matt: Why Paso?
Frank: The people. I have been blessed to meet so many wonderful people in Paso and I am blessed to be able to build a brewery for the people of Paso and the surrounding areas. The history of Paso is so amazing and the love the locals show for this town is unmatched. I am honored to call Paso Robles, California Coast Beer Co.’s home.
Matt: When did you first get into the beer industry?
Frank: I have been passionate about beer for many years. I was blessed with the opportunity to be trained by a veteran, seasoned, and skilled brew-master out of Montana who mentored me through all aspects of brewing craft beer.
Matt: What jobs did you have prior than getting into beer?
Frank: SERE Specialist for the Military, Construction Management Engineer, Math Teacher and Administrator.
Matt: What was it that sparked your interest in beer (a certain beer, etc.?)?
Frank: The science behind the craft and the culture it creates. I appreciate the people, pints, and possibilities that a pub owner gets to enjoy.
Matt: What is your philosophy behind brewing?
Frank: Respect the process and do not cut corners. Stay attentive and brew a quality craft beer that patrons will enjoy. Respect all breweries and help the community we live in. Cheers.
Matt: What are your favorite styles of beer to drink?
Frank: I love ales and look forward to sharing many different styles with our patrons.
Matt: If there’s not beer in your glass, what are you drinking?
Frank: Water.
Matt: What are some plans you have with the Cal Coast Beer Co. facility (the wine tasting room, food, live music?)?
Frank: We will continue to move forward with construction to create a fun, entertaining property for events and concerts. Iron Oaks Winery is getting close to final and should be open within the month. We are finalizing permits for our food truck. We are planning for a grand opening but are enjoying the soft opening to allow us to work out logistics and continue to fine tune the brew-house by brewing more beer.
Thank you to Frank for taking the time out to answer a few questions.
