Glunz Family Winery is located where Chumeia Vineyards used to be, on Hwy 46 East out near Tobin James Cellars. We finally made our way over to check out the place and of course, do some wine tasting. Matt Glunz, who is dad to a couple of boys that go to preschool with Sammy, met us out there to chat for a bit.
Now, not only is the Glunz family quite large but they also have a very rich and interesting history. I’m planning on doing a Q&A with Matt in order to learn more about that history. The little bit he told us in the tasting room was more than enough to intrigue me. As much as I love wine I truly do enjoy the stories and history behind the people making the wine.
That said, in this post I will stick to the wine and in a future post we’ll get more into the story.
Here’s what we tasted:
2014 Zinfandel – Bunzer’s Blend $20.00
2013 Reserve Zinfandel – Glunz Northside Vineyard $28.00
2014 Syrah – B the B $22.00
2014 Petit Verdot $35.00
2014 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon $35.00
1998 Port (62% Touriga 38% Tinta Madeira) – Madera County $25.00
Mission Angelica (aged in oak for an average of 25 years) $38.00
The wines were quite nice. I’m not typically a big Zinfandel fan and I haven’t been drinking much Port the last 12 months but these were well done. I really enjoyed the Reserve Zinfandel, Petit Verdot, and the Cab Sauv.
I really dig the property and tasting room. You can check the slideshow below to see for yourself. The old barn wood on the wall behind the tasting counter and on the front side of the tasting counter look great. Annie and I want to do something like that at our house. Also, check out the counter itself, pretty unique with the corks and old corkscrews under glass.
There you have it. Go check them out and let me know what you think. I hope to get a Q&A up sometime in the beginning of January 2017. Hard to believe how fast time is flying by. Grab the world by the horns and don’t let go.
