Matt turned 40 just over 3 years ago. That’s when his obsession with being healthy all started! Not that we weren’t healthy before, but what are we actively doing to improve things that we have control over? We started doing research and listening to podcasts and talking to people. We started getting our blood drawn regularly and drilling down on the “bad” numbers and appreciating the “good” numbers. What we’ve found is that it’s not necessarily about taking drastic measures, it’s about educating yourself and making tweaks to your day to day habits and routine. Create a baseline, make goals, start, measure, tweak, measure, etc. Being “healthy” is a way of life, not a destination.
Based on some of our own tweaks and habits, here’s a list of some pretty easy things you can introduce into your day to day routine:
- Exercise regularly. Take the stairs, park across the lot, take a walk around the block, try a new class at the gym, you get the idea. Start somewhere.
- Eat less sugar. Sugar is a poison to your body and is in most processed foods. Cut back on processed foods, soda and candy.
- Eat more REAL food. Meat, vegetables, and fruits. No explanation needed.
- Drink water. Your body digs it. You’ll feel amazing.
- Go outside more. Fresh air can be magical, and Vitamin D is important!
- Stand more, sit less. Try a standup desk. Put your laptop up on the kitchen counter. Stand in the back of the room at that long meeting.
- Stretch. It’s important to be flexible and your muscles will feel better.
- Take up a new hobby that makes you happy. Doing things that you enjoy will improve your overall well-being.
- Do something for yourself every day. Whether that means exercising, getting a massage, taking a nap, do something for you.
- Try something you’ve never done. Never been to sushi? Give it a shot. Never kayaked? Go for it! Always wanted to learn to knit? Now’s the time.
See? That list wasn’t so scary…do it for your body and your mind. Start. You just might enjoy yourself!
