As Sammyâ??s one year birthday comes speeding at us it definitely makes you realize that life is going by entirely too fast. Itâ??s been kind of funny to have these moments here and there where I really â??seeâ? him as he is today. I mean, I see him all the time but those moments where you can pull your head out of the busyness of life and parenting and sincerely be in the momentâ?¦that is when I really see this evolution from baby to little boy.
I wish I could make those moments happen more often but itâ??s the battle of having two businesses, marriage, taking care of a house, and so on. Iâ??m sure there are a lot more people than just me that go through this same thing. Those moments though, when I am truly able to be present, are fascinating to me.
How to Get in the Parenting Zone
Hereâ??s what I meanâ?¦in those moments I notice how quiet I get and how everything around me disappears. The closest thing I can describe it as is â??the zoneâ?. If youâ??ve ever played sports you know what Iâ??m talking about. When youâ??re in that you donâ??t hear the crowd or see anything but your goalâ?¦maybe itâ??s the basketball hoop or maybe itâ??s the catcherâ??s gloveâ?¦thatâ??s what I feel when I am in the zone with Sammy.
Whatâ??s even stranger is that it feels like same day payday loan he gets it when I am in that zone for a moment with him. He seems so peaceful and remarkably quiet for the screeching pterodactyl that he can be at times. Itâ??s in those moments that I can see his face the first time I saw him and right next to that is his face today. The changes, the process, the evolution, the growth both physically and mentallyâ?¦all very hard to wrap my mind around.
I would still use the word surreal to describe this journey as a dad for this first 11 months and roughly 21 days. Itâ??s been the most challenging thing Iâ??ve gone through and the most amazing. It has tested me and made me better in many ways while still seeing the weaknesses I have that need to be tended to. One of those weaknesses is finding more ways to rid my life of the busyness in order to have more of those moments with him of being in the zone. Itâ??s about letting go of â??how things should beâ? and letting things be as they are.
The takeaway: We need to try and spend more time in the zone. The only way I know to do this is to slow down, get rid of the excess stuff and thoughts that tie us down, and focus on those things that are actually important to you. Itâ??s hard to ditch obligation and the â??have toâ? stuffâ?¦but those moments are so worth it.
He is lucky to have both of you take such a “present” role in his life! It’s OK for kids to know that other things have to happen, too (life, work, housekeeping, marriage, etc). You guys are GREAT!
Thanks sis…it’s interesting, I know it’s part of life that he needs to get used to…work and all that…but it’s still hard to truly believe that in my mind. I feel like when I ignore him for a few minutes to take care of an email or something else, that I’m being a bad parent. Logically I know I’m not but my mind plays tricks on me. 🙂
