As the owner of a painting business in the state of California, I’ve had to deal with numerous inefficiencies on behalf of state, county, and city governments. One of the funnier ones (actually not funny at all) is that I need to get a business license in each and every city in which my company does any painting, and for any unincorporated areas that I might paint in I need to get a county business license.
That’s all fine and good, I understand each agency wants their money etc., but for me as a small business owner to have to go to each and every city and county government office (in the areas in which we will paint) in order to fill out paperwork and write a check, IS inefficient.
Why not make it a one stop shop, where I can go to the county office and fill out one piece of paper instead of twelve and write one check instead of twelve? Let the county office distribute the funds to each city. In addition, each city is allowed to charge whatever the hell they want per license, that’s pretty damn arbitrary…shouldn’t it be a flat fee?
Yet another reason I want out of the painting business and why I entertain the idea of leaving this crippled state.
