Business (and life in general) is simple people, stop manipulating and start building relationships. When you shift from attempting to cheat or trick people, and start caring about people your business will improve. When you start viewing every situation as an opportunity to amaze rather than a chance to be mediocre, your life will be full.
Words like “authenticity” and “transparency” are so bleeping over used but it is true, being authentic and transparent will change every aspect of your life. Your personal life and your “work” life can only improve if you care about people and learn to become valuable to them, it’s amazing what comes back to you when you do this.
The amazing Bob Burg and John David Mann talk about the act of giving, and being authentic in your giving, so eloquently…if you haven’t already, check out their book “The Go-Giver”. If you take this philosophy and add it to Seth Godin’s ideas of being an artist rather than a “factory worker” (just another cog in the machine), I think you end up with some very powerful ways to change your life.
The last few years have really been some of the most amazing times in my life…largely due to reading, and actually trying to understand, books like those mentioned above. Reading, sharing, learning, and a lot of inward searching have liberated me to live the life I want to live. I had fallen in to the same abyss as so many others…what I do defines me, I need a bigger house, I need expensive clothes, or whatever else people do to keep up with the Jones’ (who in the hell are the Jones’ anyways?).
If you feel crappy, it’s time to focus on change versus the crap. It’s time to push your boundaries and be comfortable with discomfort. When you tell yourself you’re going to try something new, like change your favorite color, it’s hard because it means changing something you have known for however long…but one thing I found is that once you do that enough you actually do get comfortable with discomfort, but instead of discomfort it becomes adventurous and exciting.
Let’s get motivated, let’s be real…let’s be more valuable to ourselves and more valuable to those around us. Everything gets better when you do!!
